Hippopotamus Defense

A knight on the rim and a bet on patience

  • Set-up systems
  • Offbeat

After 1.e4 Black plays the rare 1…Nh6 and then builds a low, compact position with …g6, …Bg7 and …d6. Black does not hurry to claim the centre and waits to see what White does. The idea is to step out of familiar theory and strike at the centre later, once White has committed. It is a rarity: a knight on the rim is slow, and White usually ends up with more space. People pick it for surprise and flexibility, not because it beats the main replies.

Defining move

1…Nh6 — the knight goes to the edge

The move that gives the system its odd character

The knight does not look at the centre. But it clears the way for the g-pawn to go to g6 and keeps f5 in reserve, from where it can lean on d4. Black claims nothing and opens nothing, so White is free to grab space at once. The price is time: the knight has to move again to reach a good square.

Tabiya

The low set-up: …g6, …Bg7, …d6 and castled

White has pawns on e4 and d4, both knights out and a bishop on e2. Black has the pawns on the third rank, the king tucked away, and the knight still on h6. White has the space; Black has flexibility in reserve. Black then picks a break to suit White's set-up: …c5, …f5 or …e5.

White’s plan

  • Take the centre with e4 and d4 and develop calmly.
  • Do not stretch the pawns too far: the pieces must follow, or Black will strike at the centre.
  • Castle and use the extra space.

Black’s plan

  • Keep a compact structure and not rush the central pawns.
  • Finish development and castle; bring the h6 knight to f5 or regroup it.
  • Choose a break to suit White's set-up: …c5, …f5 or …e5.

History

A compact set-up with the pawns on the third rank came to wider notice when Boris Spassky played it twice with Black against Tigran Petrosian in the 1966 World Championship match; both games were drawn.
