Defining move
2.c4! — a gambit without a sacrifice
The move that makes the opening the Queen's Gambit
The c4 pawn attacks d5 and invites Black to take it. But if Black does, White gets the centre and fast development and wins the pawn back. So Black more often declines: backs up d5 with e6 or c6 and chooses how to build the fortress.

The Tartakower system
The classic position of the Queen's Gambit Declined. White has the d4–e3 centre and pressure on d5, Black a solid defence. Next Black puts the bishop on b7, plays …Nbd7 and waits for a moment to strike with …c5. This is the position of the sixth game of the Fischer–Spassky match in 1972.
The centre
A closed centre and a fight for d5White has d4 and e3, Black d5 and e6. The centre stays closed until someone decides on c4xd5 or the strike …c5.
