Rubinstein Opening
A Colle with the bishop rushing to b2
- Positional play
White builds a compact set-up: pawns on d4 and e3, bishops on d3 and b2, a knight on f3. The b2 bishop eyes the long diagonal, and at the right moment the e3 pawn goes to e4. Black answers with …c5 and …d5 and has a sturdy position. It is a quiet, positional opening where long plans matter and sudden attacks on the king can follow.

Defining move
5.b3 — the bishop heads for the long diagonal
The move that sets it apart from a plain Colle
The b3 pawn clears b2 for the bishop, which then looks towards g7 and Black's king. White does not hurry to change the centre: it prepares Nbd2 and the break e3-e4. Black has to decide how to hold the centre rather than just copy White.
Tabiya
The Colle–Zukertort set-up, both sides castled
White has developed everything without hurry: the bishops look at the kingside, and the d4 and e3 pawns stand firm in the centre. Black has put a bishop on d6 and a knight on c6 and castled. White prepares Nbd2 and e3-e4. Black wants to trade the central pawns or strike with …c4 to drive back the d3 bishop.
White’s plan
- Play Nbd2 and prepare e3-e4 to open the centre.
- Use the d3 and b2 bishops to attack on the kingside.
- Keep the centre intact unless there is a reason and stay compact.
Black’s plan
- Hold the centre with the c5 and d5 pawns and develop.
- Strike with …c4 to push the d3 bishop back.
- Watch the kingside: White has dangerous ideas like Bxh7.
