Vulture Defense

The knight bolts ahead while everyone else is still at home

  • Offbeat

After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 Black skips the usual 3…e6 and throws the knight straight to e4. The idea is to stir up the pieces around White's d5 pawn and start a tactical scramble before the opponent settles. It is a rare and risky choice: the knight on e4 gets chased, and White is happy to take a big centre, so it suits players who enjoy the unexplored.

Defining move

3…Ne4 — the knight jumps first

The move that turns a Benoni into the Vulture

The knight goes to e4 before Black has played …e6 or …d6. It eyes f2 and d2, and the queen gets a chance of a check from a5. But it stands alone in the centre and is easy to chase with Nd2 or f2-f3. So Black always faces one question: will the lost time be repaid?

Tabiya

The knight on d6 hits c4, but Black is behind in development

Black's knight has spent three moves and landed on d6, where it eyes the c4 pawn. The queen on a5 pins the white knight on d2. White is not fully developed, but has the centre and the space. Black looks for active play; White tries to break the pin and keep the tactics from working.

White’s plan

  • Break the pin on d2, protect c4 and finish developing.
  • Use the space: e2-e4 and a big pawn centre.
  • Keep Black's tactics at bay: develop in order and watch for checks.

Black’s plan

  • Pressure c4 with the d6 knight and the queen.
  • Bring the bishop to the long diagonal with …g6 and …Bg7.
  • Play on the kingside with …f5 before White gathers the centre.
